The Last Post of 2011

A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

Proverbs 4:18

The path of the righteous
is like the first gleam of dawn,
shining ever brighter
till the full light of day.

I was going to write about First Fruits but I think I will save that for next week. I wanted to take a moment to reflect back on the past year.  Where have I been and where am I going.  I love the new Facebook Time Line feature because I can look all the way back to last January and follow my posts and remember what I was thinking and doing. Last January I was posting some of my mosaic cards and I was in the midst of my own little Mother Teresa reading marathon. I posted on January 10th
"I am having a Mother Teresa marathon. I read this article and I am reading a book called To Find Hope about her life. I know in my own little bit of work with the poor that there is often great spiritual oppression or darkness that we feel individually and as a team . It has caused me to pull my head out of the sand and admit there is a spiritual war going on. As I try to reach souls for the God's kingdom
I like this quote about Mother Teresa: "Her work in Calcutta's slums illustrated something that the high priests of global development often tend to overlook: in order to pull people out of poverty, it is important to first empower them with self-esteem and with the hope that change is always possible."
At that time I had not yet started A Devotional Mosaic and was posting occasionally in a couple of other blogs. Here are links to some of the articles that I wrote about my Mother Teresa Marathon. If you are getting this by e-mail you'll need to click on the title and come back to the site. I was reading Mother Teresa at the time because of the work I continue to be involved in ministering to the inner city homeless and poor. Much of her wisdom and inspiration has carried me through this year.

There are a few others posted there. By the end of January I was sick and struggled to get well for the next couple of months. I was also the chairman of the board of our church and we were faced with how we would survive and at that point it looked like we would close if God did not step in somehow. Amazingly a church that should have died continues to stand on the corner of 2nd and Division in Spokane. We continue to feed 100 - 200 homeless people a week. At this point about 20 -30 of those folks attend our church. I am thankful.
Yesterday we served 230 homeless and poor folks. The end of the month the numbers are high. I think this might have been a record beaker."
In February I posted the following to encourage a friend.
This is my quote of the week - God works in the difficult stuff to. Just because something is hard does not mean God is not in it with us. In 1895, Andrew Murray was suffering from a long lasting and very painful back injury. One day a woman in great trouble came to where he was staying and asked his hostess if he might have any counsel for her. He handed her a piece of paper and said, “Give her ...this advice I’m writing for myself. It may be that she will find it helpful." Here is what he wrote:

"In times of trouble, say, “First, he brought me here. It is by his will I am in the strait place, in that I will rest.” Next, “He will keep me here in his love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as his child.” Then say, “He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons he intends me to learn, and working in me the grace he means to bestow.” And last, say, “In his good time he can bring me out again. How and when, he knows.” Therefore, say “I am here [1] by God’s appointment, [2] in his keeping, [3] under his training, [4] for his time."

In March we put on a wedding for a formally homeless couple and I had gotten the church web site functional.  My computer had to be repaired and we found in taking opening it up after 10 years of not problems that it was filled with more dust than imaginable. I guess at about that time God began quite a healing work in my own heart that started by saying yes to a couple of friend request from way back in my life. Wow who knew what one very small click of a computer would take me. Had to deal with some big areas to un forgiveness and repentance that I had locked away.
In April this quote spoke to me
"Once our eyes are opened by God, we will see all the events of our lives, whether great or small, joyful or sad, as a chariot for our souls. Everything that comes to us becomes a chariot the moment we treat it as such. On the other hand, even the smallest trial may become an object crushing everything in its path into misery and despair if we allow it. ~ Hanna Whitall Smith"
One of my favorite christian writer died in April and I posted about it.
"One of my favorite writers died this week. David Wilkerson passed away on Wednesday in a car crash. He has stood in my mind as one of the mighty oaks of this generation, a Father in the faith. While I rejoice that he is home with Jesus, I will miss his daily thoughts and inspiration.
I know he will have a lasting legacy that will speak far beyond his mortal life.
In May I started laying glass on the Beloved project - that was quite a journey. Through it I discovered that people were interested in the mosaic process and followed my postings about it.
June a lot of posts about the Beloved project
In July I started this Blog thanks to the encouragement of a friend. I never imagined that I could actually stick to this Monday - Friday writing schedule.
In August I got my bike and remembered how much I loved to ride. I visited my sister and came home with some new direction and soon after started my Coach Training.
September started another year of homeschooling - we signed up for a bunch of on line classes - can't say we have really enjoyed them. Niah will head to real high school next year and Cai wants to go back to the way we did things. We are finishing up what we started.  September is birthday month for my kids. We as a family were quite blessed because my husband won a prize from Coke Rewards by turning in bottle caps at their website. We all got new lap top computers from Best Buy. Very cool. I finished the Beloved project.
October - my birthday month. I spent a little time at the Spokane Public Market.  I continue to teach guitar and I have a couple of coaching allies as I keep working through my coach training.
That gets us to November and December where I have continued to write daily, and post about my mosaic projects. I hear from people that the things I am writing continues to encourage them. Its been a full year full of little purposeful steps. I look at my face book page and I think maybe I have grown up to be an artist, and a writer and one who prays for and encourages people.  I have grown to be much more open and transparant in the past year. My life is much more visible and an open book. I still have some hidden things that are just between me and the Lord.
In looking back I realize I have come a very long way over the course of one year. God has been gracious to walk with me step by step, day by day. He has picked me up when I have tripped and fallen. He has cared for me in so many ways.  I think it is good to look back and reflect on what he has done. To take stock of where I am at this point and to hold the vision of things he has put on my heart out there and trust that He is working. I'm sure 2012 will have some things that I can't see just like 2011 has been full of surprises and challenges and some major victories.  I hope this has encouraged you it has me. Cause I can get so focused on my daily struggles and the stuff I have to do that I forget that I am making progress. I am stronger and healthier physically, mentally and spiritually than I was a year ago for that I am very thankful.

See you next year - I'm out of time and will have to post this typos and all.

Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for taking us from where we are in this moment to where you want us to go. It is a journey and you delight to take it with us one step at a time.  Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you that you have started a good work in each of us and you will carry it out to completion.

Tips for Commenting and Sharing

A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

My son's: Niah looking so cool, Cai ever fun, and Me

Ok so I need your help. I know there are a fair number of you lurking and some of you who read this pretty faithfully. You've told me in person or on face book and I can look at the stat numbers and see that there are people reading from all over the world.  I do have days that it is really hard for me to write. Days when I feel discouraged and wonder if anything I am saying is connecting with anyone out there. I realize my job on this is to write what the Lord inspires and puts on my heart. What He does with it, and who it happens to touch is His job. He might want to use you to help with that too.

So here are a few little things you might want to know about to help you spread the word when I write something that encourages you or that you think may encourage someone you know.
At the bottom you will see under the post some little box icons.

Tips for Sharing These Posts with your Friends
See the envelope icon  it points you to some ways you can forward a post to others.

The first option looks like it has a "M"
It opens up a box that lets you put in the address of who you want to e-mail the post to and even allows you to send them a short not to let them why you are sending it to them.

The next one looks like a "B" and lets you post a copy of this blog page on your own blog.

The next looks like a "T" and let you post a link to your twitter page. Twitter frustrates me because I can't seem to shorten what I have to say down to so few words.  If it works for you by all means use it to spread the word.

The last one looks like an "F" and is my favorite button. It lets you post a link of the page on your facebook wall. You can also comment to your friends about why you are sharing the link. It is a super easy way to help spread the word about this blog.

Memory of the Righteous & a guy we call Santa

A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

Proverbs 10:7

The memory
of the righteous
will be a blessing,
but the name
of the wicked
will rot.

I heard so many Christians discussing through the years, the topic of if we should celebrate Christmas with Santa. I listened to a woman on Christian radio lamented that she had no photos of her daughter with Santa. The lack of photos was not from a point of conviction but simply because the child was frightened by Santa and not interested in sitting on some strangers lap. As Christians we live in a world that celebrates various holidays during the year. Christmas is one of them, that while for us, it is a celebration and a remembrance of the birth of Christ for the rest of the planet it is about good will, cheer, gifts, food, parties, concerts.... Is it wrong for us as believers to enjoy and partake in the traditions of this world?  I will leave you to search that one out in the Word and come to your own conclusions. Jesus left us in this world to be a light in the darkness. To be salt that makes people thirsty for His living water.  So I ask you, do the things you do to celebrate honor and reflect the Lord you serve? Perhaps there are some adjustments you might want to make to shine a little brighter for Him.

So lets take on Santa. Wikapedia is a good place to start http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas From what I read there he seems to me to be a man who loved and followed Jesus during his life.

His Prayer Life:
He was clearly an effective intercessor. God answered his prayer enough that he became known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Heck, there's something I'd like my kids to know about. How could we as a family become more faithful as intercessors, praying for the needs of those around us. What if God started answering those prayers. What if you and your family became known to the unbelievers around you as wonder workers in the name of Jesus. That could be pretty cool but most of us don't really believe in prayer or we would really do more of it. Oh, ouch did I step on a few toes. All too often we would rather run around complaining and wining and asking others to pray for us than to go directly to God not only for our own need, but for the needs of others. I can be as guilty of this as anyone else at times on this score. As Christians we do not need an intermediary to get to Jesus, he is the intermediary between us and the Father. In John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. I am very thankful for the wonderful intercessors that I have come to know, people who have challenged me to step up my own prayer and devotional life because of what I have seen of their alive, vital and abiding relationship with Jesus.
This guy Nicholas prayed and had a track record of his prayers being answered. There is another guy in the book of acts named Cornelius "Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God." Lets keep in mind James 5:16 "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." So quick how do we get to be righteous? If you are not sure check out Romans 3:21-26  Come on connect the dots what do you need to do to be a righteous person who's prayer are powerful and effective?
Back to Saint Nicholas...

His Life as a Giver
Another part of the life of Nicolas was that he was a kind and generous man. He saw needs around him and found ways to meet those needs with out shaming the poor for their lack. There are numerous stories about how he put coins in shoes and helped out daughters of poor who had no dowries.
Ok so this moved on to become stories of a wonder working gift giver we now call Santa.
Tell your kids about a believer who's life made enough of a difference that stories and legends of his generosity grew to encourage all of us to remember to give to others at Christmas time.

I love this story from the wikapedia page linked above. "
"However, in his most famous exploit, a poor man had three daughters but could not afford a proper dowry for them. This meant that they would remain unmarried and probably, in absence of any other possible employment would have to become prostitutes. Hearing of the poor man's plight, Nicholas decided to help him but being too modest to help the man in public (or to save the man the humiliation of accepting charity), he went to his house under the cover of night and threw three purses (one for each daughter) filled with gold coins through the window opening into the man's house.
One version has him throwing one purse for three consecutive nights. Another has him throw the purses over a period of three years, each time the night before one of the daughters comes "of age". Invariably, the third time the father lies in wait, trying to discover the identity of their benefactor. In one version the father confronts the saint, only to have Saint Nicholas say it is not him he should thank, but God alone. In another version, Nicholas learns of the poor man's plan and drops the third bag down the chimney instead; a variant holds that the daughter had washed her stockings that evening and hung them over the embers to dry, and that the bag of gold fell into the stocking."

You can see from this story where the idea of stockings and chimneys might have started.
I used the verse today about the memory of the righteous being blessed. This man left a legacy that although it has become very commercialized in our day still causes sinners and saints to give to others.  To stop for a day and give to others. It's quite remarkable what can come of a little generosity. I think Nicholas must have understood the story of the Sheep and the Goats. He seemed to have embraced the idea of "What ever you do for the least of these you have done it unto me"

I think we can be pretty sure that this man was a giver and that he had an effective prayer life. We know he was a leader in the church of his day.  While I'm not a big advocate of the whole venerating of "Saints" thing I do think there are believers who have walked before and among us, who have modeled the life of Christ in their own life, in ways that we should remember and honor. I did have an Orthodox friend who at one point that helped me to see some of the value in remembering the lives of godly believers or "saints" as they are called in some parts of the church. 1 Corinthians 11:1 Paul says "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."

Mother Terea is one of those moderen day people who's example of humility and care for the poor was remarkable. I think her life might serve as an example to us all. I think God showed that lady a thing or two in her day. This Nicholas guy did enough in his day that people told stories about him to their children, and those stories were passed along and clearly embellished along the way.

So here's my take on the whole Santa thing and I have walked through it with my own kids. I decided early on that I did not want to lie to my kids about a magical man who brings gifts in a sleigh drawn by reindeer.  So we have embraced that story as a wonderful pretend story that grew out of a life of a real believer in Jesus. A man named Nicholas, who prayed and cared for the poor is a good reminder to us to live our our faith in Jesus.  His prayer life and generosity have lived on beyond him.  As believers should be able to agree that there are some things in the life of this man that are worthy of praise.  I wanted to tell my children about the real man, so that as they learned more and more about Jesus they would know him as someone who is real. Not a made up mythical character like Santa. I did not want them to one day realize that I had lied to them about Santa, and to think that I might have also lied to them about Jesus. Does that mean we have not had some fun with the pretend story of Santa through the years? We have - they like to watch all the Christmas shows and will break out in a chorus of Here Comes Santa Clause and Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Reindeer. Its ok to pretend, its ok to have fun.

I do want to remind us all that - we are in different stages in our journey with Jesus. My convictions on this subject are based upon my own belief that it is important to be open and honest. Those are two things that are pretty high on my list of values. I am not meaning in anyway to make anyone feel guilty about how you happen to celebrate the holidays or even how you raise your own kids. Mainly just sharing how it has spun out in our family. Like you, I am a long way from perfection and am continually growing in my walk with Jesus. Whatever you do remember that it is faith that pleases God. What does the Word say?  Can you support your convictions in the Word?

Lets remember Philippians 2:12 -16
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.  Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life—

Prayer:
Dear Lord,
I pray that we would live our lives in such a way that when we depart this life, our memory would be blessed. I pray that like Nicholas and Mother Teresa and many other believers who now are part of that vast cloud of witnesses in Heaven, that our lives would be a light in the darkness. Thank you for the foot prints others have left for us to learn and be encouraged by. I pray that we would be so salty that we would cause those around us to be thirsty for your living water.  Allow us to leave a lasting legacy of some sort that will speak beyond our years on this planet. Maybe we've never even given that much thought - I pray you would inspire us in this moment and help us to grab on to your vision and purpose for each of us.

PS. Did you notice in the icon image above that Nicholas has such an honor of the Bible that he does not even touch it with his hands but holds it carefully in his robe. I just like how the artist depicted Nicholas honor for God's word. He must have been a cool guy. I look forward to sitting down with him in eternity and hearing about his life.

50 Things I Loved To Do As A Kid

A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

Proverbs 19:20-21

“Listen to advice
and accept instruction,
and in the end
you will be wise.
Many are the plans in a man’s heart,
but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”

Well by the time you are reading this, yesterday will have been my birthday. However I am writing this at the end of the day and it is still my birthday. I got kind of side tracked working on a brochure. But hey it has been my birthday and that's what I was into doing with my day. Along with reading all the notes and birthday wishes people left on my face book page. Anyway you can see some images of the 3 fold brochure I worked on for my Life Coaching business or practice, called 50 Thing I Loved To Do As A Kid. I am basically re-working something from my Coach Training Course into a format that will work for my plans and purposes and hopefully help me to strike up conversations with people I meet through out my day.

Back when I was doing Mary K we were trained how to warm chatter. I made up cute little fold over cards that had lipstick samples. I was pretty good at talking with strangers and did pick up many of my clients in such a manner.  Giving them a gift often opened the doors for a conversation and quite often you found someone who would be interested in what you had to offer.  I tried to do it in a way that I was a blessing and not a nuisance. So I have been thinking about meeting people for coaching through a similar kind of grid. As a result I have been wondering what is the gift, or the sample that I have to give away?  So my idea was to create this brochure of a discovery activity that helps people to remember things that they loved to do when they were kids. Quite often we are so busy that we loose sight of those things. For me one of those things was bike riding. I had forgotten how much I loved riding bikes and as a result of remembering I have really enjoyed going out and riding my bike this summer. Sometimes remembering those things we enjoy helps to bring balance and fulfillment to our lives. Anyway I have created my own little tool for this task and will begin to test it to see if it works.

So our verse today is about the plans we make in our hearts and listening to wise instruction. My plans don't always go exactly the way I originally thought they would go.  I guess I don't generally get to bent out of shape by that because I tend to view life as a journey.  There are some things in my journey that I have control of but then there are other things that I have less control. I can't know how it will all play out but I can do the things that show up on my radar today.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the creative process and the value of being able to hold the mental image of where things are at present and the mental image of the final project at the same time. In doing that I can't always see how I will get from here to there but I know that I will get there. I begin by doing the things that I can do and I don't worry about the future steps just the ones that I need to deal with today. In the case of my mosaic projects like the current one called The Tree of Life I don't yet have a clear mental image of what it is to be yet. So I begin by thinking, praying, studying what I can find written on the subject. You will find funny little sketches on scraps of paper on my desk, or in the margins of my journals. It is a process of discovering the piece of art and trying to discover things about it. I try to take in to account the ideas of others around me. My friend Donnie says it needs to have some dementional aspects to the project. My husband, Marco wakes me up in the middle of the night to tell me a dream he has had about the heavens opening up and a mighty tree with swirling octopus like roots descends and digs itself into the ground. The fruit on the tree when picked is replaced by new fruit. His telling of it was much more elaborate but I was half asleep at the time.
I guess my point is that I always have a plan or a sense of where I am heading or want to go and at the same time I am aware of the present place in my journey. Sometimes it seems like I have a very long way to go but I hold on to the vision. I hold on to the bits of vision that the Lord reveals to me along the journey but I don't spend a lot of time worrying about how I will get from here to there. I do the things that I need to do today, they may seem small and insignificant at first but they are steps of faith that move me just a little bit closer to the thing I see off in the distance.

Prayer
Dear Lord,
You know the plans we have and the things we want to do. You know the dreams we dream and the hopes we have. You know the steps we will need to take to get from here to there. You know the unexpected curves that will send us along paths we had not anticipated. Help us to listen to advice and instruction and to make wise choices. In the end it is your plans and purposes that will prevail and we choose to trust you to lead us day by day, step by step.

Ps. If you are interested in doing the 50 Things I Love To Do As A Kid actiity,  you can send me an e-mail at princessmargot@hotmail.com with your name and mailing address and I will send one out to you. What are you feeding your heart?

What are you feeding you heart?
A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

Philippians 1:9-10 (CEV)
9 I pray that your love will keep on growing and that you will fully
know and understand how to make the right choices. Then you will
still be pure and innocent when Christ returns. And until that day,

I know my own heart seems like such a wild thing - and as a result I have for years kept a very tight reign and even suppressed it much of the time.  Here in this apostolic prayer, Paul is praying that our love will keep on growing. I think that though my heart seems like an untamed creature much of the time - it is like any creature - it needs feed and what I feed it will later influence the choices I make.
In the NIV verse 9 says “ 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.”  Knowledge and depth of insight - would be far better things to feed my heart than bitterness, envy, anger, violence and other things that squeeze out love and push it into a corner where it can’t grow.  I need to make right choices for my heart. Proverbs 4:23 says  Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Perhaps we need to backwards engineer our current life once in a while. To do regular heart check ups and maintenance. Some people take better care of their cars, pets and children than they do their own heart. What is flowing or growing out of your life? Is it good or messed up? Either way now consider the regular diet of your heart has been fed in the proceeding months and years. What will you feed it from now on. It is good to begin feeding it on the word. Psalm 119:11 says “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  Spend a time tending it and pulling out the weeds that would choke love from growing in your heart.  Maybe its not so much that your heart has been feed such bad things - perhaps it has been simply starved and pushed into a corner because it seemed too wild to deal with. Maybe your heart is so over grown with weeds and brambles that you stand looking at it with despair and can’t even begin to see where to start. It may take time but its time to take back that ground and to reclaim it for the Lord so that love may begin to grow and thrive.

Things to Ponder:
Does my heart need a check up?

What things are growing or flowing out of my life and heart?

What have I been feeding my heart?

What are some of the weeds that need pulled up down to the very roots?

Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Help my heart and love to keep growing. Help me to make wise and insightful choices. Help me to guard my heart and feed it on things that will cause it to grow so that good things would flow from it. Help me to pull the weeds that I have allowed to grow to make room for love to grow more and more. Help me hide your word in my heart so I don’t sin against you.

Bless me Lord and I will bless others.
A Devotional by Margot Cioccio

Numbers 6:26
The LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

I love it when my pastor or any speaker gives a benediction or speaks a blessing over a group of people. I know most people hardly notice it and probably don’t realize what is happening in that moment. For many people it is just part of the form of the service. Its just how we end things.
I challenge you to see it as much more than a poetic ending.

For me the benediction is a gift of a blessing being spoken over my life. Words are powerful. God spoke and created all that is. We read in Proverbs 18:21a that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The benediction is a time where life is being spoken over us.

It reminds me that my God loves to bless me. I stand and I always raise my hands to receive the gift of that moment in time. I need the Lord to turn His face to me, I need peace. This is one of many wonderful blessings one can receive.  My challenge to you is to really receive the blessing spoken over you in such moments. So often we leave the gifts God has for us sitting on the shelf not realizing that a gift was even given.  It is like the woman who reached out to touch the hem of the Lords garment and received her healing.  Reach out and receive the blessing and watch and see what God does with it during the week.  A week filled with peace is an awesome thing.   There are days when peace seems very far away. If you are at that place of needing a blessing start with this one. Lord turn your face upon me, I need your peace. Help me in this moment to receive the blessing you have for me. You know the things that I will need to bring you glory in the up coming hours and days. Fill me up, let your peace over flow from my life on to the folks around me.  Bless me Lord and I will bless others.

Things to Ponder:
Have you experienced the peace of God? Are you walking in that peace now?______
Clearly God gives us peace  - are you willing to receive the gift or will you continue in the old familiar patterns of worry and doubt?______________________________________
Are you speaking life or death in to your circumstances and over the people in your life?
_____________________________________________________________________________
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Turn your face towards me and give me your peace. Help me realize the power of the words spoken over and into my life. Help me to be one who blesses and brings peace with the words of my mouth into the lives of others. Let your thoughts flow from my tongue
